“In our time celibacy appears to be one of the most contested realities of Christianity. The historian knows that this has been the case from the beginning”. This quotation serves Juan María Uriarte as the point of departure for an interdisciplinary treatment of celibacy from the perspective of those branches of knowledge with which he is familiar: anthropology, theology, spirituality and the experience of pastoral dealings with many living celibate lives.

JUAN MARÍA URIARTE was born in Frúniz, Vizcaya, in 1933 and was ordained a priest in 1957. He holds a degree in Theology from the Comillas Pontifical University (Madrid) and in Psychology from the University of Louvain, and obtained the diploma in Religious Psychology from the Institute AMAR (Paris).
Named auxiliary bishop of Bilbao in 1976, bishop of Zamora in 1991 and bishop of San Sebastián in 2000, he headed this diocese until 2010. In the Spanish Episcopal Conference (CEE) he has been a member of the Episcopal Commission on Seminaries and Universities (1978-1990) and of the Episcopal Commission on the Clergy (1990-1993), of which he was president from 1993 to 1999. He belonged to the Permanent Commission of the CEE (1993-2005) and was a member of its Executive Committee from 1999 to 2005.
